The Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, received Saturday a phone call from the Vice-President of the European Commission, High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas.
The discussions between the two officials covered the current state and future prospects of Algeria-EU relations, both in terms of bilateral ties relating to the association agreement between the two parties, and within the multilateral framework involving southern Mediterranean countries.
Regarding bilateral relations, Attaf underscored the need to activate the main mechanism responsible for governing the Algeria-EU association, namely the Association Council, which remains the appropriate framework for addressing all questions of mutual interest, both political and economic.
On multilateral cooperation, both parties exchanged views on the draft Charter for the Mediterranean, which is currently under discussion between the EU and southern Mediterranean countries.
At the conclusion of the phone call, both parties agreed to continue and step up efforts to achieve the necessary balance in the economic partnership between Algeria and the EU, in order to protect the interests of both sides and contribute to strengthening peace, security and sustainable development in the Euro-Mediterranean region.
