Algeria affirms from New York that the resolution of the Syrian crisis will only be possible through political means

NEW YORK (United Nations) - Algeria expressed, Tuesday from New York, its concern over the increase in violence and the deterioration of the humanitarian and security situation in Syria, affirming that the settlement of the Syrian crisis will only be possible through political channels and while moving from crisis management to its resolution.

Algeria's position was expressed by its permanent representative to the United Nations, Amar Bendjama, on behalf of the A3+ group (Algeria, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, in addition to the representative of the Caribbean and Guyana), before the Security Council on the situation in Syria.

Mr. Bendjama expressed Algeria's deep concern about more than 13 years since the Syrian crisis and the continued suffering of the Syrian people, at a time when millions were forced into exodus. strength.

The group further expressed its support for the efforts of the United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pederson and his commitments, including those relating to confidence building through a progressive methodology, calling on all parties stakeholders to help him facilitate discussions and negotiations between Syrians, in accordance with decision 2254, adding that he looked forward to the 9th meeting of the Constitutional Commission, while emphasizing the importance for the latter to achieve progress in the political process.

At this crucial turning point that Syria is going through, the A3+ Group emphasized "the importance of an inclusive process with the full participation of women and civil society", expressing the wish to remove all obstacles , resolve outstanding issues and see Syria move forward in the process of building peace and national development.

After expressing its deep concern about "the escalation of violence particularly in northern Syria", the Group called for a ceasefire throughout the country, noting the need for coordination between countries in the region to combat terrorism, particularly in light of the recent attacks perpetrated by the “Daesh” organization.

He also called for "decisive measures to be taken to combat terrorism with a view to restoring state authority, security and stability in Syria."

The Group warned of the danger of the extension of the regional conflict and the situation in Gaza, endangering the stability of Syria, calling for "respect for the sovereignty of Syria and restraint in order to avoid a new escalation.

Put political differences aside and work together for Syria

On behalf of the A3+ Group, Algeria stressed, in its speech, that after more than a year since the earthquake that struck Syria and Turkey, "the humanitarian situation continues to worsen due to the economic crisis, conflict, and unilateral sanctions", adding that "according to an overview of humanitarian needs for the year 2024, nearly 16.7 million people, 75% of whom are women and children , are in need of humanitarian aid.

In this regard, she stressed the urgent need to "remedy the funding gap in the humanitarian response plan to ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid", urging donors to "honor their commitments to relief, subsistence, rapid recovery and development to meet growing human needs", while emphasizing "the crucial importance of respect for humanitarian principles, impartiality, and independence in humanitarian action".

The A3+ Group welcomed the decision of the Syrian Government to extend the mandate of the United Nations and its specialized agencies at the border crossings of "Bab al Hawa", "Bab Al-Salam" and "Al-Raï", which allows you to better plan or even anticipate their operations.

He described the delivery of aid via borders as "vital", as well as the need "to invest in all humanitarian channels, including mechanisms at border level to deliver all aid, on time and without hindrance."

To this end, the group urged the international community to support the efforts of Syria and the United Nations aimed "at rehabilitating infrastructure and restoring basic services, in addition to facilitating the voluntary return of refugees and displaced people in the dignity and safety.

He also called on all parties to honor their legal commitments in this regard, welcoming the agreement between Syria and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) concerning the right of return, announced during of the 74th session of its executive committee.

In its speech on behalf of the A3+ group, Algeria stressed that "at a time when all the world's attention is focused on the situation in Gaza, we must not forget Syria, especially since the situation there is explosive", hence the imperative to "move from management to resolution of the crisis".

Algeria also insisted on the importance of “overcoming political differences and working together towards the same goal, Syria”, stressing that “the Syrian people deserve to live in peace and stability”.
